Under the direction of the Director of Technology Services, upgrades and administers district network file and application servers including, but not limited to, Novell Netware, web, domain name system (DNS), dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), Microsoft Windows Servers, Microsoft structured query language (SQL) and Linux servers. Provides district-wide information systems management support, coordination of the overall operation of data network systems, software support, infrastructure design and operations. Installs and maintains complex applications, prepares cost/benefit analysis of hardware/software solutions, acts as security officer for district networks and oversees other network administration.

The Network Systems Administrator installs and maintains complex applications on district servers and maintains specialized and advanced knowledge of networking hardware and software. Advancement to this position is based on need and compliance with the requirements of the position, including the ability to coordinate the overall operation of data network systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • SQL programming and database administration.
  • Installs and maintains complex applications on district servers.
  • Maintains specialized and advanced knowledge of networking hardware and software.
  • Implements remote control software designed to support troubleshooting and software installation across the network.
  • Designs, implements and maintains systems to provide remote access to district servers by authorized employees.
  • Conducts advanced network and network server troubleshooting.
  • Prepares cost/benefit analysis of alternative hardware and software solutions.
  • Surveys hardware and software trends and makes strategic recommendations relative to new advances and needs of the District WAN.
  • Design on-line quality assurance support programs including system and database security.
  • Design systems and procedures to protect data integrity.
  • Configure, monitor, and maintain comprehensive and redundant data backups systems.
  • Develops functional specifications, standards, and requirement for hardware and/or software purchases and design to ensure optimum system and end-user performance.
  • Acts as security office for District networks, preventing unauthorized access.
  • Install, configure, monitor, and maintain all network related equipment as required for network and Internet connectivity District-wide.
  • Daily administration, monitoring, and maintenance of various servers, systems, and applications, used by the District.
  • Design, deploy, update, and maintain the District's Microsoft Active Directory (AD) infrastructure and environment
  • Designs and manages projects.
  • Anticipates emerging and long-range system issues and develops appropriate strategies.
  • Assists the Director of Technology as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position. Knowledge and Skills
    • In-depth technical knowledge of personal computer (PC) operations, including the relationship and usage of various input and output components, business and education support software, and terminology.
    • Operating systems used in conjunction with networks.
    • Network administration duties of Novell Netware files server and Microsoft Windows application server.
    • Protocols and procedures for setting up new equipment, troubleshooting and performing routine maintenance.
    • District network protocols.
    • Maintains advanced knowledge of Google's online environment for education institutions.
    • Writing skill to document technical procedures.
    • Sufficient human relations skills to convey technical information to others in a user-friendly manner using tact, patience and courtesy. Abilities
      • Install, configure, troubleshoot and coordinate networked computer workstations, systems, and programs used by the District in both instruction and administrative areas.
      • Install and configure computer components such as, but not limited to, cards and drivers.
      • Design, install, maintain, and document network hardware, software, and operating systems.
      • Troubleshoot complex network and server issues.
      • Analyze data and evaluate the needs of users and develop alternative solutions to problems and needs.
      • Implement system to protect data security.
      • Maintain accurate activities log.
      • Prepare cost/benefit analysis.
      • Read, interpret and apply complex technical information including equipment blueprints and schematics.
      • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
      • Maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.
      • Train users and staff.
      • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
      • Prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines. Physical Abilities
        • Ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom locations and to bend, stoop, crawl, and reach to install cables and equipment.
        • Hand-eye coordination and dexterity to make small component connections and operate a computer terminal.
        • Visual acuity to read technical documents and instructions and align small components.
        • Auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the telephone.
        • Lift, push, and pull objects of moderate to heavy weight.
          Minimum Qualifications

          Education and Experience
          Bachelor's degree in computer science or related technical field and four years of experience managing a mutiprotocol network, complex applications, and server environment. Additional experience may be substituted for higher education on the basis of two years of experience for one year of college.

          Licenses and Certificates
          Valid California driver's license.

          Working Conditions
          Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor, positioning in cramped areas, and handling of medium, yet, awkward materials.
