Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Acute Care/Medical Surgical is the designated leader responsible for providing the overall leadership and direction for Med/Surg/Tele, Telemetry, Ortho/Spine/Surgical and Medical Oncology. The Director has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for planning, organizing, developing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the human and material resources necessary for quality patient care and effective nursing operations. Participates in assessing the environment, forecasting trends, transmitting values, communicating ideas, developing and implementing standards and initiating programs and systems. Has overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending and implementing changes to methods.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Development of organization-wide patient care programs, policies, and procedures that describe how patients' nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated, and met. Assists with implementation of an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients. Directs the development of hospital-wide nursing care programs, policies, procedures, Standards of patient care, and Standards of Nursing practice that describe how the nursing care needs of patients, including age related, spiritual and cultural care needs, are assessed, evaluated and met. Assures coordination of patient care with other Hospital departments as appropriate. Promotes quality patient care, nursing services, including nursing care, are provided on a continuous basis, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to those patients requiring such care and service and monitors nursing services for each patient's status and coordinate the provision of nursing care while assisting other professionals in implementation their plans of care. Ensures the continuous and timely availability of nursing services to patients. Facilitates design and development of appropriate standards of patient care based on nursing theory. Supports design, implementation, and evaluation of appropriate delivery of care models for patients. Ensures development, implementation, and evaluation of systems and practices, which facilitate smooth workflow and quality patient care. Participate in the evaluation, selection, and integration of health care technology and information management systems that support patient care and efficient utilization of nurses and nursing staff. Creates and maintains an environment to ensure that nursing services remain viable, attractive, and satisfying to patients. Assist with development of Performance Improvement Project in each area of responsibility. Assists in the review & analysis of results. Supports action plans developed from analysis. Prepares reports for Administrative Council and the Board of Directors as needed. Analyzes statistics and takes appropriate action as necessary. Implements cost containment measures and revenue enhancement ideas when applicable. Monitors compliance with all applicable external agency regulations. Ensures compliance with all personnel to safety standards, Hazardous Materials Management program, Universal Precautions, and Infection Control. Demonstrates sound management and leadership principles. Promotes associate growth and development through effective use of resources. Recruits, manages, leads, develops and retains staff, in alignment with the organization structure and practices Qualifications Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. Demonstrates awareness of and ability to apply knowledge of current developments in healthcare. Flexes staffing based on the needs of the Medical Center and maintains budget and productivity accountability Implements mechanisms to maintain financial viability of areas of responsibility. Maintains confidentiality of all patient and hospital related communications, documents, and records. Maintains clinical and management skills and expands knowledge base through participating in conferences and seminars. Performs required duties in accordance with prescribed hospital policies and procedures. Maintains an awareness of Hazardous Materials and is compliant with safety and infection control policies. In accordance with the mission and philosophy of AHMC Health, performs work consistent with the standards of Seton Medical Center, the community, and regulatory agencies. Assesses personal learning needs and utilizes available resources in self-development including new equipment/products used in performance of job. Demonstrates active listening skills and treats all contacts with dignity and respect. Accomplishes objectives within prescribed time frames by prioritizing and organizing workload supporting effective management practices. Supports mentoring and coaching) in conjunction with direct supervisor. Helps ensure accountability of the Information Technology Staff working at the hospital. Reconciles conflicts within and between staff regarding resources, deadlines, and standards. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Participates in hospital committees and workgroups as assigned. Abides by facility's Code of Conduct and HIPAA compliance. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Include the minimum job-related skills such as language, analytical, mathematical and communication skills and other qualifications such as degree, related experience, training, or license required to perform the essential components of this job.

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required
  • Master's Degree in Nursing, preferred
  • CA RN license in good standing

Work Experience:

  • At least 5 years of progressive clinical nursing.
  • 3 - 5 years of Managerial experience preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate with various individuals both inside and outside the organization; and able to understand and create reports/presentations/proposals.
  • Proficient with computer systems including but not limited to MS Office.
